WHO ARE THESE GUYS?

Every day, just before the sun sets, they start to gather on the Eastern Shore …….

 The favored ones get the best viewing spots

 Braving busy afternoon traffic, it seems they are drawn here by a force neither they, nor we, can comprehend.

 They stand in rapt wonder as the sun slides down behind the trees on the opposite shore.

 The youngsters, knowing no fear, try to get as close as possible to the waning warmth.

The crowd thins in the darkening gloam. Where do they go? Why do they come? What gives?

  1. Yeah, I’m going through my personal Thesaurus searching for a genus and species here. A. .morphous. is my best bet so far, but ‘gophers attired in cheaply-tailored gunny sacks’ has some merit.
    Be they what they may, I certainly do see the mood you evoke in your titles. It’s gratifying and also odd they we humans are programmed to sense the mood of critters, regardless of Lineaus’s specs.

    • Linnaeus was usually too busy playing piano, Lucy eyeing him, adoringly, to concentrate on scientific nomenclature which, as we all know, is binomial, and therefore unacceptable in Oklahoma and Arkansas.

These gnarled gnomes gnaw the ground with the insipidity of creatures left unfinished and abandoned by God in wrath; they shriek in pain, and in confusion they tangle with one another like battling Titans, from horizon to horizon, in a steaming creation still being formed. Fog-panting and exhausted they stand in this unreal misery — and we, like a stanza in a poem written in an unknown foreign tongue, are shaken to the core.
